I grew up in Madagascar and loved the huge variety of insects found there. In college, while majoring in French (my third language) and biology, a friend of mine said something to me that sparked my interest in bees and beekeeping and changed the trajectory of my life.

Since that first hive in St. Paul, I have gone on to keep bees in Long Prairie, MN, and in two cities in Madagascar. I now maintain 30 hives, all in urban Duluth, MN.

This used to be the case in rural areas when there were many small farms with a variety of crops, but more often these days, there have been more large commercial farmers with acres and acres of just one crop. This doesn’t provide much variety for the bees’ diet, unfortunately, and also carries a risk of bees ingesting a variety of chemical fertilizers and fungicides, which can lead them to be weak and unhealthy.
That’s why I’ve become so passionate about letting people know that beekeeping is very possible and FUN in an urban setting — no matter what town or city you live in. Bees CAN be kept very successfully in backyards, on roofs, or even on back porches, and have great access to varied diets because of all of the gardens and fruit trees available.
